If you’re interested in joining the blog team at the BBN, read on and fill out the form at the end of the post if you’re still interested in being a part of the team!

The blog is moving to a new location, and big changes are coming to it, but we need a team of dedicated members to help us keep it going. If you’re interested in guest posting ever so often, email Liz via liz[at]mybbn.com for more information.

If you do not meet all of the preferred requirements, it’s totally fine! It’s just an idea of what we’d like.

Preferred Requirements

  • Experience with/in blogging and/or journalism (need journalism experience?)
  • Familiarity with WordPress
  • Knowledge of basic HTML, does not use in-line CSS (except for where done so by default by WordPress itself)
  • Superb grammar, punctuation and proofreading skills
  • Able to meet deadlines, work alone and with a team
  • Knowledge of SEO in terms of tags, categories, and titles
  • Able to write informative, not verbose, posts
  • Active participant in the BBN community, helps advertise the BBN, doesn’t portray the BBN in a negative fashion
  • Keeps a professional profile/presence online

Responsibilities

Note: Responsibilities may change over time and/or as needed, and this page may not always stay up-to-date. These should be considered loosely, as each writer’s responsibilities will vary and depend upon their skills, talents, niche and abilities as a whole.

  • Part-time contributor: Provide at least 1 blog post per blog theme (blog themes last for one quarter)
Full-time contributor: provide at least 1 post per month
  • Stay on the mailing list (this is how mass contributor emails are sent; it’s easier) and keep your contact information up-to-date
  • Stay an active participant on the BBN.

Payment

All contributor positions are currently on a voluntary basis. However, your social media and blog links will go on our writers’ page, and you will be interviewed for the blog. We’ll also advertise your posts with us, and we hope you’ll return the favor by doing so as well.

Contributed content

We will only accept original content that has not been posted elsewhere. Once it goes up on our blog, it becomes property of the BBN, and it may not be published in full elsewhere. You can quote our posts, but not in their entirety.

Other information

The BBN has access to our own stock photos and licenses — more information to be given upon acceptance.

Posts are written in journalism/news format.

IMPORTANT FORMATTING TO REMEMBER:

Using https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/735/02/ as reference…

  • abbreviations and acronyms:
    • Spell out “and” — do not use a plus sign (+) in posts unless writing equations, only use plus sign (+) when directed and approved by an editor
    • Spell out “Facebook” — do not use “FB”
    • Avoid alphabet soup.
  • ages
    • e.g. “23-year-old”, not “23 year old” or “twenty-three year old”
  • books, periodicals, reference works, and other types of compositions
  • dates, months, years, days of the week
  • We don’t have any use for datelines or addresses, at least not at the moment.
  • numerals
  • punctuation
  • states and cities
  • etc.

The Purdue OWL is a pretty decent and helpful resource.

Application

We’re looking for a variety of creatives to help us expand the Blog Team, and the post possibilities are limitless! (Feel free to pitch some of your post ideas!)
